A Beautiful New World opens a revealing window onto the dynamics of contemporary China presenting a fresh look at the clash and confrontation between materialism, capitalism, traditional values and human desires. Pitting the haves against the have nots, the urban cosmopolitans against the rural unsophisticates, and dreams against reality, all of this is revealed through the eyes of a young guy from the country (Bao Gen, played by Jiang Wu, the yo unger brother of China's leading actor, Jiang Wen.) He travels to Shanghai to claim the prize of a new 2-bedroom apartment which he won in a newspaper contest. Armed only with the little money his family can spare, a scrap of paper with the address of a long-forgotten distant relative, and a warm personality with an honest and sturdy demeanour, he seems ill-prepared for the rigors of the big city, especially after he learns that his "prize" hasn't been built yet and won't be ready for two years. Surrounded by a stellar list of top Asian and Chinese actors and cast of characters including his scheming aunt Huang Jin Fang, (played by Tao Hong, winner of China's 1998 award for best actress,) the gritty subway musician Ah Liang (played by Wu bai, Taiwan's top-selling rock artist,) the beautiful Ah Hui (Chen Ning) and her boyfriend Xiao Bai (played by Ren Xian Qi - China's best selling pop musician for the past two years;) Bao Gen must find his own way and make a go at life in the big city.Directored by Shi Run Jiu and produced by Peter Loehr.
